Preserving the Past: How to Care for Your Original Movie Posters

Michael Jeffrey
Original movie posters aren’t just decorative — they’re tangible pieces of cinema history. Whether you’re a casual collector or a seasoned archivist, knowing how to properly care for your posters can make all the difference in maintaining their value and visual appeal for years to come.
Here’s how to store, frame, and protect your original movie posters — plus how we at Rendezvous Cinema help preserve them in transit.

1. Storing Posters the Right Way.

  • Avoid Folding: If your poster didn’t originally come folded, keep it rolled. Repeated folding can lead to cracking, especially on older prints.

  • Use Acid-Free Materials: Store posters in acid-free sleeves or between acid-free backing boards. Avoid regular plastic or cardboard, as they can degrade over time and harm the print.

  • Keep in a Cool, Dry Place: Humidity is the enemy of poster preservation. Aim for a stable, dry environment (ideally between 18–22°C and under 50% humidity).

  • Avoid Sunlight: Direct UV light will fade inks and damage paper. Store in a dark place, or use UV-blocking materials if your posters are displayed.

2. Framing Tips for Displaying Posters

  • Use Archival Mounting: Avoid glue, tape, or adhesives directly on your posters. Instead, use archival corners or hinge mounting techniques that allow removal without damage.

  • Opt for UV-Protective Glass or Acrylic: Always use UV-resistant glazing to reduce fading. Museum-grade glass is ideal but even basic UV-blocking acrylic can help.

  • Choose Acid-Free Backing and Matting: This protects your poster from chemical transfer and extends its life. Ensure the frame’s entire interior is pH neutral.

  • Never Hang in Direct Sunlight or Damp Areas: Choose interior walls away from windows and radiators to reduce exposure to light and fluctuating moisture.
3. Protecting Posters in Transit — Our Process

At Rendezvous Cinema, we understand how valuable these pieces are — both emotionally and financially. That’s why we package all our original posters with preservation in mind:
  • Posters are gently rolled and shipped in thick, crush-resistant tubes unless they are already folded and small enough to fit into a card envelope.

  • We use acid-free tissue paper to prevent ink transfer and creases

  • Water-resistant outer layers provide added protection from spills or damp conditions
Our priority is getting your item to you in the same condition it left us — ready for archiving, displaying, or framing.

Final Thought: Treat Them Like Art
Whether you’re collecting vintage horror posters, sci-fi classics, or rare indie releases, each print tells a story. With the right care, your collection can outlive trends and even generations.
