Poster Condition Grades Explained: What Collectors Need to Know

There’s a moment every collector knows well - the thrill of finding the perfect poster, followed by the quick scan for its condition grade. When you’re buying original cinema posters, the condition isn’t just a detail, it’s part of the story. These pieces lived real lives in real cinemas, handled by staff, displayed in foyers, rolled, folded, and sometimes forgotten for decades. That history is what makes them special, but it also means no two posters are ever the same.

At Rendezvous Cinema, we individually grade every poster by hand, giving you a clear, honest understanding of what you’re buying. Whether you’re building your first few posters or adding to a long‑standing collection, knowing how to read condition grades helps you make confident, informed choices.

Here’s what each grade really means and what collectors should look for:

Good Condition

A poster graded Good is rolled and well‑preserved for its age. You may see:

  • small scuffs to edges or folds
  • areas with slightly more wear than expected
  • light surface marks

These posters remain visually strong, with no major damage affecting the artwork. They’re ideal for collectors who want authentic originals that still display beautifully. Regardless of our grade, we always recommend inspecting the photos closely before purchasing.

Fair+ Condition

A Fair+ poster sits between Good and Fair - still rolled, still displayable, but with more noticeable signs of age. Expect:

  • scuffs to edges and folds
  • chipping around the edges (not affecting the main image)
  • occasional residue, such as from an old rubber band
  • slightly heavier wear in specific areas

These posters show their history, they remain strong pieces for collectors who appreciate character and authenticity. As always, we encourage careful inspection of the images.

Fair Condition

A Fair poster has lived a fuller life. You may see:

  • scuffs and surface wear
  • more pronounced scuffing in certain areas
  • small tears, usually at corners or along fold lines

Despite these signs of age, Fair‑graded posters still present well and offer excellent value for collectors who prioritise rarity or artwork over condition perfection.

Poor Condition

A Poor poster is heavily worn but still holds historical and artistic value. These posters are:

  • folded and shipped folded
  • likely to show chipping, scuffing, and small holes at fold corners
  • prone to tears around edges or folds
  • sometimes marked with pen or other signs of handling

While they show significant wear, they remain authentic pieces of cinema history, often appealing to collectors who enjoy restoration projects or want rare artwork at a more accessible price.

Why Condition Matters and Why Transparency Matters More

Original posters are used items. They were never meant to be collectibles, yet they’ve become treasured pieces of film history. That’s why condition grading is so important, and why we take it seriously.

At Rendezvous Cinema, every poster is:

  • inspected by hand
  • photographed clearly
  • graded with honesty
  • described in detail

We want collectors to feel confident, informed, and excited about every purchase.
